A long time ago, before science had really been very advanced, Mongrellan was a place that was still yet to be discovered. It was a peaceful, un-named place, uninhabited by concious life. It wasn't completely peaceful, for the world is not a peaceful place. The will to survive dominates even the wish for peace. But it was one of the few places on the planet that was un-tainted by human technology.
Sadly, this rare peace didn't last too long. Eventually, science began to climb the ladder. Eventually, DNA replication or cloning was discovered and harnessed for its wondeful uses. Over the years, cloning became more and more perfected. The cloned creature no longer was weak or died unnaturally fast. At first, cloning was only used to help bring back endangered species, such as the Pandas and the Right Whales. But someone watched one to many episodes of Dark Angel or Jurassic Park. Someone got greedy. Someone decided to mess with the nature of certain animal DNA. There were protests-- but money always dominates morals.
A scientist by the name of Dr. Andy Rope got the idea into his head that they should try to used the perfected cloning technology to create super hybrid species or animals by splicing special genes together. Many scientists liked his ideas and began to experiment, and both humans and animals were tested on. It was a slow and painful process, though. At first, none survived. Then, few survived. The world cried in pain as the Epidemic of 2020 raged through the Americas as the result of a mistake in testing. Lab rats escaped. Imperfect experiments spread infestations. A new super bug, taking place of the thingyroach, multiplied all over the planet. All errors. All miscalculations.
So far, none of the experiments have suceeded in being the super species that Dr. Rope thought they would be. Nobody wants the failed experiments. At first, they were killed, or put on display cruelly until they died of exposure or malnutrition or dehydration. But the world screamed in protest, wiser now than it had been before. Those who wanted to put a stop to the cloning failed. But they put enough pressure on the government that the failed experiments were shiped off to a deserted island.
The scientists did create something in many of the failed experiments. They created consciousnous. Intelligence. Knowing it would be their end to expose this, they made as though all the creatures were simply animals. Thus, few know the truth.
Mongrellan, which was named by the first hybrid experiment to survive, became the official haven for failed hybrid experiments after it was found that no one lived there. The balance of nature began to become upset from the hybrids. It is just barely hanging on, but it is up to the hybrids of Mongrellan to keep the balance of nature in check. Be careful, for the fate of the island, and perhaps later the fate of the world, rests in your hands. Or paws, claws, hoofs....
